(Reuters) – Russia has invited experts from the United Nations and the Red Cross to investigate the circumstances of the deaths of dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war on Friday in the Olenivka prison, located in the part of the Donetsk region. ruled by pro-Russian separatists, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

In a statement, the latter said to have taken this initiative “in the interest of conducting an objective investigation”.

The separatists accuse the Ukrainian army of having bombarded the prison using American HIMARS multiple rocket launchers and announced a death toll of 53.

Ukraine denies any responsibility and instead accuses the Russian army of having shelled the prison to conceal the ill-treatment inflicted on the detainees.
