The Minister of Territorial Communities and Mayor of Beauvais Caroline Cayeux maintained her comments of 2012 on the opening of marriage to same-sex couples. Then a senator at the time, she called this bill “design against nature“. Several anti-homophobia associations announced on Wednesday July 13 that they had filed a complaint against the Minister Delegate in charge of local authorities.

A complaint sent this Wednesday to the Paris prosecutor’s office and whoseAFP took cognizance. It was filed by the associations Mousse, STOP homophobia, LGBT Sports, LGBT Education, LGBT Families and ADHEOS. The intended offense is “public insult towards a group of people because of their sexual orientation by a person holding public authority“.

“Many friends among these people”

It was during a broadcast of the Public Senate television channel that Caroline Cayeux, who since her appointment as minister announced that she wanted to resign from her mandate as mayor of Beauvais in the coming weeks, affirmed to maintain her comments of ten years ago. Here is what she said:I don’t think I spoke of caprice […]. Of course, I stand by my words. But I have always said that the law, if it were passed, I would apply it.»

The homosexual community and anti-homophobic associations also reacted strongly following these remarks: “I must tell you all the same I have many friends among these people. Frankly, it’s a bad trial that I’m being made and it upset me a lot“.

A tirade strongly criticized and considered outrageous. Faced with numerous criticisms, Caroline Cayeux then tweeted on July 12: “My words hurt many of you. I deeply regret them, they were naturally inappropriate. Equal rights must always be a priority in our action.»

While the newly appointed minister was in Beauvais this Thursday, July 14 to decorate, medal deserving staff and attend the parade of the city, she will have to start her post at the Élysée and deal with this collective complaint.
