Spain: End of the Griezmann saga, permanently transferred to Atlético

This time it’s final: Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona on Monday formalized the permanent transfer of French striker Antoine Griezmann until 2026 to the Colchoneros, where he has been on loan since the summer of 2021, for 20 million euros.

The end of a soap opera that has been running since this summer. The French world champions, who fell in the middle of a contract muddle that saw the Catalan club take on the Madrid club, have been down to half an hour a game since the start of the season.

The reason ? A clause in his loan deal that said the Rojiblancos would be forced to sell the player for €40m

A sum far above the current value of the 31-year-old, who has been driving his coach Diego Simeone to use it sparingly since the start of the season.

In the end, the two clubs agreed on a permanent transfer of €20m (+ €4m in variables), figures confirmed by Blaugrana president Joan Laporta during the club’s general assembly on Sunday.

“Furthermore, if Atlético sold him, they would pay us the difference to get €40m, which was the amount initially envisaged in the transaction,” said Laporta.

Griezmann has therefore signed on at Atlético until 2026, with a salary that has been reduced to €8m net per year (down from the current €12m), according to the press.

Therefore, Griezmann will stay with his favorite club, where he showed himself to the world between 2014 and 2019 until he reached the final of the Champions League (2016) and won the Europa League (2018).

In the summer of 2019, a year after winning the World Cup with France in Russia and after announcing his intention to remain at Atlético in a documentary entitled The Decision, Griezmann had nevertheless decided to move to FC Barcelona.

He then became one of the most expensive recruits in the Catalan club’s history (€120m). But his two disappointing years in the Blaugrana shirt prompted him to return to Atlético in summer 2021.

On Saturday, Antoine Griezmann started for the second straight season and helped the Colchoneros defeat Girona 2-1 with a 5th-minute assist for Angel Correa.
