Sweden’s Left Party calls on Stockholm to put pressure on Iran

Swedish Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar and MP Håkan Svenneling called on the Swedish government to take action against the Iranian regime on Tuesday (11 October) following the death of Mahsa Jina Amini at the hands of police in Sion, an event that sparked protests around the world.

Iran has been rocked by a series of protests that began with the death of Mahsa Jina Amini on September 16 in the country’s capital, Tehran.

The 22-year-old died after being arrested by vice squads for not wearing a veil. The death was followed by a wave of protests, to which Iranian police responded with violence and many protesters died.

In an interview with Göteborg Posten, Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar and MP Håkan Svenneling called on the Swedish government to act.

“Sweden cannot stand idly by while freedom fighters are murdered by a fundamentalist dictatorship. Therefore, the Left Party calls on the government to take measures to put pressure on Iran.”said the members of the Left Party.

Ms Dadgostar and Mr Svenneling also stressed that Sweden should work towards introducing new targeted sanctions against the Iranian leadership at next week’s EU meeting in Brussels.

They believe Stockholm should do more to investigate and prosecute crimes currently being committed in Iran.

“Countries like Sweden have the ability to investigate and prosecute crimes, regardless of where they are committed or the nationality of the perpetrator or complainant. We have to use this chance. Even the abuses of today should one day be punished.”said members of the Left Party.

They also criticized outgoing Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde for her meeting with her Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian at the UN General Assembly in New York in September.

“Now is not the time to legitimize the Iranian regime, as Secretary of State Ann Linde did when she posed with the Iranian foreign minister during her recent visit to New York.”pointed out Dadgostar and Svenneling.
