The Commission condemns Turkey’s actions towards Greece and Cyprus

Turkey must respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all EU member states, particularly Greece and Cyprus, says the Commission’s 2022 Enlargement Report.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi presented the enlargement package to the executive on Wednesday (13 October). This report examines the progress of the Western Balkans and Turkey on their respective paths towards EU membership and recommends candidate status for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The European Council has repeatedly reaffirmed its strategic interest in a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean and in the development of a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship with Turkey.”we can read in the report.

“However, the situation in the eastern Mediterranean is again tense. Turkey must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all EU member states. »

“After some positive developments in 2021, relations with the EU deteriorated in the first half of 2022 due to repeated violations of Greek airspace by Turkish warplanes in the Aegean Sea and threatening statements by Turkey regarding the sovereignty of the Greek islands and towards Cyprus”the report also explains.

In addition, the commission warned Ankara against its military exercises in the maritime areas of Cyprus and the obstruction “illegal” Research activities in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus.

The European Commission’s 2022 Enlargement Package report expresses “serious concern at the continued deterioration of democracy, the rule of law, fundamental rights and the independence of the judiciary” in Turkey, as well “Economic governance and the smooth functioning of the market economy”.
