The most profitable speed camera in the world is on the A1 motorway south of the Senlis-Chamant toll
Friday evening, July 1, 2022, the site radar, located at kilometer point 38.7 of the A1 motorway, in the Paris-province direction, flashed 57 times between 8:50 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. The speed being limited to 90 kilometers per hour, the radar caught 57 vehicles that exceeded 90 kilometers per hour (and, in reality, the real 96 or 97 kilometers per hour to take into account the tolerance enjoyed by motorists).
At 90 euros, (if the offender pays within fifteen days, otherwise it is 135 euros) the PV, this automated speed control device brought in 5130 euros. Which means, by reasonable extrapolation, that he can easily bring 100,000 euros into the state coffers per day.
This radar is placed just before the site of a flyover and the work is scheduled to last until March 31, 2023. As this radar in place since April 1, 2022, it can be estimated that it will bring in 36 million euros in a year.
The road safety authorities are doing things well, since they have placed, in the other direction, at kilometer point 39.1, another radar which seems just as effective, or even more, in the province-Paris direction, after the Senlis-Chamant toll.
The two radars will thus be able to bring in some 70 million euros to the State in one year.
We can therefore reasonably conclude that these two radars placed on the A1 motorway, which is considered one of the busiest in Europe, are undoubtedly the most profitable radars in the world.
To let wildlife pass
These two radars were placed to ensure the protection of motorists and agents of the motorway company Sanef during the construction of the Ermenonville ecobridge. Started in November 2021, this 30-metre-wide work of art is intended for the passage of wild animals: wild boar, roe deer, red deer, pine marten, red squirrel, European hedgehog, dormouse, reptiles (agile lizard ), toads, insects…
The cost of the bridge, communicated and financed by Sanef, is 7.2 million euros.
Speed cameras report ten times more!
On this account, we can estimate that the State will push French motorway companies to build more and more overpasses and, in this, it is good news for friends of nature. However, it is questionable whether these speed cameras correctly fulfill their role of lowering the speed of users. In both directions, the warning signs limiting the speed to 90 kilometers per hour are not particularly visible even if their location, size and number precisely meet road safety standards. The same can be said for the signs announcing the radars, these being of very limited size and placed (especially for the one in the province-Paris direction) in the middle of other visual obstacles.
Finally, one can wonder if it is appropriate to reduce the speed to 90 kilometers per hour when three lanes remain in circulation and only the emergency lane has been neutralized. Especially since it no longer seems that there is a need for human presence, during this period of the site, near the traffic lane.
In any case, the result is effective for public finances.
The report near the radar at kilometer point 36.7, on the A1 motorway, in the Paris-province direction, was carried out on Friday July 1 between 8:24 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. The phone was placed on the protective grid located a few meters from the roadway. For exactly one hour, 57 flashes were detected and counted by eye. The mobile phone that was filming, an Iphone 13 pro, which was set to 60 frames per second, failed to capture all of the flashes that light up for a fraction of less than 1/60th of a second. The camera does not have the retinal persistence that makes an eye keep the perception of the flash beyond its triggering. It is also very likely that there were more flashes than the 57 noted because attention was sometimes taken by the setting of the camera or due to inattention.
On the other hand, in the other direction, whereas the night began to fall at least five flashes were clearly visible in the space of about thirty seconds.
As far as the frequency of the flashes is concerned, it does not matter whether the traffic is very active or more sparse. When there are a lot of vehicles, there are always some to slow down the flow. On the other hand, when a car arrives alone at the scene of the flash, it is easily surprised. So basically, unless there is a long and precise statistical analysis, there is no noticeable difference between the volume of traffic and the number of flashes (unless there is no car at all during A long period).
