The new iPhone will be available in Russia, a minister assures

(Reuters) – Russians can buy Apple’s new iPhone 14 even though the US tech company is leaving the country thanks to an alternative import system put in place by Moscow, a minister told RIA Novosti news agency on Thursday.

In March, in response to Western sanctions, Russia allowed retailers to import products from abroad without the brand owner’s permission.

When asked if the new iPhone unveiled by Apple on Wednesday would be imported in this way, Trade and Industry Minister Denis Manturov replied: “Why not? If consumers want to buy these phones, yes. You will have the opportunity.”

Apple stopped selling new products in Russia in March, a week after the Russian military invaded Ukraine, but its products remained available in Russian stores as retailers sold their inventory of older models and bought new devices through the import program.

Already on Thursday morning, the Russian mobile operator MTS sold the new iPhone 14 models for pre-order with a starting price of 84,990 rubles (1,396.24 euros) for the 128 GB version.

According to MTS, delivery can take up to 120 days and reserves the right to cancel orders if there are difficulties importing the products.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
