The Russian Air Force patrols the Belarusian border

(Rpt Title)

(Reuters) – Belarus said Russia’s air force conducted regular patrol flights over their shared border on Thursday amid fears in the west and in Kyiv that Minsk could play a more active role in the war in Ukraine.

Russia has deployed a task force of 9,000 troops and military equipment to its neighbor after Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said last week his country was under threat from Ukraine.

“Currently, the Russian air component of the regional force group is conducting a planned patrol at the air borders of the Union State,” the Belarusian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Belarus shares a 1,085-kilometer border with Ukraine and, at its narrowest point, is less than 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly signaled the danger of an attack from Ukraine. However, it has not yet sent any armed forces to fight alongside Russia.

Kyiv denies these allegations.
