The Russian Ambassador in Sofia in the front row during the Bulgarian national commemorations

Russian Ambassador to Sofia Eleonora Mitrofanova appeared right behind Bulgarian President Rumen Radev during Unification Day celebrations in the city of Plovdiv on Tuesday (September 6).

Unification Day is a Bulgarian national holiday commemorating the unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and the Province of Eastern Rumelia in the autumn of 1885. The Russian Empire vigorously opposed this unification.

For this reason, Ms Mitrofanova’s presence in Plovdiv comes as a surprise given her attitude towards the Bulgarian authorities and the expulsion of 70 Russian diplomats in June.

Also, at the beginning of the war with Ukraine, Russia designated Bulgaria as an enemy country.

However, relations with Ms Mitrofanova have warmed after the government was overthrown in a no-confidence motion and a presidential-appointed caretaker government is now in power.

On the evening of the celebration, she was one of the guests of honor alongside President Roumen Radev.

Earlier in the day, Ms. Mitrofanova posted an angry message on Facebook about an attack on the Soviet Army monument in downtown Sofia. This attack came on the eve of the anniversary of September 6, 1944, when the Soviet Union declared war on Bulgaria.

In recent months, the monument has been repeatedly covered in red paint, a symbol of the blood flowing in Ukraine.
