The Ukrainian army claims breakthroughs in the north, south and east
The Ukrainian army said on Thursday it had taken Moscow-controlled areas and settlements in the Kharkiv (northeast), south and Donbass (east) regions, breaching Russian defenses by tens of kilometers.
“Military units penetrated enemy defenses to a depth of 50 km. During active operations towards Kharkiv, more than 20 settlements were liberated,” said Oleksiy Gromov, an official, at a press conference, a senior official of the Ukrainian General Staff.
700 km² repetition
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Wednesday evening without further details advances in this border region of Russia, whose capital Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city, has resisted Russian troops since the invasion began on February 24. According to Oleksiï Gromov, a total of 700 km² was taken over.
In the south, he assured “that in certain directions, depending on the sector, the Ukrainian army “penetrated deep into the enemy defenses, from two to several tens of kilometers”. He gave no geographical details while a Ukrainian counter-offensive is underway in the Kherson region.
“Some places have been liberated,” he said simply. In the Donbass, the Ukrainian soldiers gained two and three kilometers around the towns of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, which were still under Ukrainian control, and, according to Oleksiï Gromov, recaptured the village of Ozerne from the Russians.
