The company had told users it would serve targeted ads starting July 13, without asking for their consent to use the data stored on their devices.
Italy’s Data Protection Authority said it reserves the right to impose unspecified restrictions if TikTok does not opt out of the announced changes.
TikTok has defended its targeted advertising plans.
“We believe personalized advertising provides the best in-app experience for our community and brings us into line with industry practices,” the spokesperson added.
