Uber investigates “cybersecurity incident” after data breach

(Reuters) – Uber Technologies said Thursday it was investigating a cybersecurity incident after reports that its network had been hacked and the company had to suspend several internal communications and engineering systems.

According to a New York Times report published Thursday citing an Uber spokesperson, a hacker compromised an employee’s Slack messaging app at his workplace and used it to send a message to Uber employees announcing that the company suffered a data breach.

Apparently, the hacker was then able to gain access to other internal systems by posting an explicit photo on an internal employee information page, the article adds.

“We are in contact with law enforcement and will post further updates here as they become available,” Uber said on Twitter, without giving further details.

The Slack system was taken offline by Uber Thursday afternoon after employees received the hacker’s message, the article said, citing two employees who were not authorized to speak publicly.

“I announce that I am a hacker and that Uber has suffered a data breach,” the message reads, which then lists several internal databases that have allegedly been compromised, the article reports.

A person claiming responsibility for the hack told the newspaper that she texted an Uber employee claiming to be an IT manager at the company.

According to the report, the employee was asked to provide a password that allowed the hacker to access Uber’s systems.

Slack told Reuters that the company is investigating the incident and there is no evidence of an inherent vulnerability in its platform.

“Uber is an important customer, and we’re here to help if they need us,” said Slack, which is part of Salesforce.

According to the article, Uber employees have been told not to use Slack. Other internal systems were also inaccessible.
