Volvo S60 T6 Recharge: it makes you forget the Peugeot 508 PSE

We often forget, but Volvo is one of the pioneers of the plug-in hybrid. Even before Mitsubishi and its Outlander, the Swedish manufacturer offered the V60 D6 break in the catalog in 2013, which combined a diesel and electric engine. Ten years later, almost the entire range is available as a rechargeable hybrid. Admittedly, Volvo has abandoned the diesel, but the offer has extended to various categories, in most cases with two power levels. This is the case with the S60 sedan, manufactured in the United States, which offers this type of engine, in the T6 Recharge (398 hp) and T8 Recharge (455 hp) variant.

Launched a little over three years ago, the Volvo S60 has reached an age where most models undergo a few modifications to bring them up to date. This Swedish with the advantageous silhouette clearly did not need to be redesigned. So Volvo was content to review the design of the rims and reorganize the range. Technically, however, it is a sensitive update that affects plug-in hybrids: the electrical part has been considerably modified for 2022. The battery gains significantly in capacity (it goes from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh), thanks to new battery chemistry, with higher energy density. This boosts the range in electric mode, which we measured at around 75 km in real conditions. More than double the previous version!

A power of nearly 400 hp

But Volvo didn’t stop there. Since this new battery delivers more power, the permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, which drives the rear wheels, is also new. Now, its power reaches 145 hp and it delivers 309 Nm of torque, compared to 87 hp and 240 Nm so far. Already correct before, liveliness in electric mode now becomes very comfortable. Making daily journeys in electric mode with this Volvo S60 T6 Recharge is absolutely nothing of a punishment… Except when recharging: the 3.6 kW on-board charger is clearly too tight for a battery of this size. It takes five hours to fill it up. This does not make it possible to recover significant autonomy during stops of a few tens of minutes during a day punctuated by appointments. Too bad, as the softness of this mode makes you want to use it to the fullest.
