War in Ukraine: Kyiv continues to put pressure on Moscow in the annexed areas

Following the announcement of the results of four referendums organized by Russia in Ukraine, Ukrainians are unwilling to let go of the pressure not to define possible borders. Advances are coming in Lyman, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kyiv, bringing difficulties for the Russian armed forces.

Counterattacks, gaining ground to make Russian annexations fictitious… Since Vladimir Putin’s appearance in Moscow on Friday, Ukrainian troops have continued to advance into the Donbass. For Russia, these military advances weaken the position of the areas conquered since the February invasion and thus also the annexed areas.

Strong Ukrainian pressure

The town of Lyman, captured by Kiev’s armies this weekend, is a major rail hub in the Donetsk region. Its loss will cause supply difficulties for the Russian armies and will likely prompt them to retreat further. This will therefore allow the Ukrainians to exert greater pressure on the officially annexed separatist regions and to present the Kremlin with this dilemma: how can a border on the ground and the illusion of a quiet life in Russia confirm the administrative announcements when a Front is not held and the incessant bombardments.

What applies to Donetsk and Luhansk also applies to Zaporizhia and Kherson. A problem recognized by the Kremlin, which raises the question of annexing only the conquered parts or all of the two regions. According to US estimates, Moscow controls only 72% of Zaporizhia and about 88% of Kherson. This means that Russian officers on the various fronts are eagerly awaiting the tens of thousands of partial mobilization recruits to confirm in practice last Friday’s triumphant announcements.
