Why the EU appoints a tech ambassador to San Francisco

Gerard de Graaf, pack your bags. The 1er september, this 60-year-old Dutchman will become the first European technology ambassador in San Francisco. Until now, he was in charge of the digital economy at the DG Connect of the European Commission and was responsible, among other things, for hot-button issues such as fighting Gafam lobbying. Brussels confirms that this appointment will be accompanied by the opening of an office dedicated to tech.

The post of tech ambassador will thus be attached to the diplomatic department of the European Union. Gerard de Graaf will be the first to hold this position in Silicon Valley. It must be said that the Commission and American tech companies have conflicting relations from the first anti-monopoly laws to legislation on privacy and the regulation of social networks, including ecological measures.
