With her rib steak, Sandrine Rousseau is following in Barthes’ footsteps

The offensive by Sandrine Rousseau and her environmental friends against “the barbecue and the steak” that would take part in our macho imagination could not leave us indifferent. This little provocation – she refrained from attacking the merguez sausages – is also an invitation to introspection. We will thank her for letting us (re)think Roland Barthes (1915-1980), who in his mythologies had just written a gory chapter on “steak and fries”.

About the “symbol of masculinity” mentioned by Rousseau (Sandrine) we find these lines: “Steak participates in the same blood mythology as wine. It’s the heart of the meat, it’s the meat in its natural state. pure and whoever takes it assimilates the bullfighting power.” Including the elites: “Just as wine becomes for many intellectuals a mediumistic substance that leads them to the primordial force of nature, so for them steak is a redeeming element thanks to which they pursue their headiness and with blood and soft flesh evoke the sterile dryness they are constantly accused of”. The metaphorical use of the rib steak therefore also allows politicians to put some controversial food in their mouths without mentioning the fries, “Food Sign of Frenchness”.
