Yaël Braun-Pivet curbs (already) the budgetary power of Eric Coquerel
A blow to a tradition that is more than sixty years old. On July 12, the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, regained control of one of the main powers of the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Eric Coquerel. In a press release, she announced that she had censured several amendments to the health watch bill tabled by deputies. Reason: these amendments, which proposed the reinstatement of unvaccinated nursing staff, would increase public spending, which article 40 of the Constitution prohibits to parliamentarians.
However, since 1958, this filtering of the amendments to decide whether or not they increase public expenditure and can therefore be discussed by the deputies was delegated by the President of the Assembly to the President of the Finance Committee. The break is therefore historic and Eric Coquerel did not fail to denounce it. “It is something absolutely exceptional, he noted in the Hemicycle. As I speak to you, my collaborators are looking for a case in history where such an event has already taken place. .”
